Museums as the New Form of Meditation

Art as Meditation

Art as Meditation

De-stressing seems to be the hottest topic of our time.

We are exposed to a variety of de-stressing and self-care methods, from health and wellness programs to meditation, yoga, massage, nature, support groups, adult coloring books etc.  As is evident from the transformative experiences that occur here at the Art Process Studio, we have a strong belief in the healing power of art making. Our mixed media classes, workshops and retreats revolve around the meditative quality of creativity and leave participants feeling rejuvenated and tranquil.

Restorative Power of Art Museums

In addition to the process of art making, current research finds that the physical space of an art museum can be a restorative environment that boosts general wellbeing. While visiting art museums recently myself, I have noticed the recharging effect it has on me. I instinctively respond to the quietness of the rooms filled with nothing but art, the atmosphere of reverence towards the pieces and the almost spiritual feel of the space.  Standing in front of a breathtaking work of art, I find inspiration in a sense of shared universal experience with my fellow humans. I feel alone yet deeply connected.

Doctor Prescribed Museum Visits

Physicians members of Médecins francophones du Canada has partnered with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) to encourage physicians to prescribe free museum visits to patients. Nathalie Bondil, the museum’s general director behind the initiative, believes that these forms of cultural experiences will soon be recognized as comparable to physical activity for their health benefits. In an article in the BBC, Bondil affirms that the “neutral, beautiful, inspiring space” of a museum can boost mood, improve wellbeing, and give patients a chance to explore experiences unrelated to their illnesses. Dr Hélène Boyer, with the Médecins francophones du Canada, also points to the growing body of research that suggests contact with art has a positive impact on people’s health. In her practice, she confirms that she is  “confident that [her] patients will be delighted to visit the museum to ease their suffering, without any side effects,” she said.

My museum/gallery visiting program

Inspired by this research, I’m excited to announce that I will be launching a monthly museum/gallery visiting program next month. The first one bing on March 16th. We will meet at an art space and have a discussion of the art on display. From there we will either visit additional galleries in the area or find a fun place to have lunch, coffee or a drink! I love th idea of community building through the art experience.
